Anotácia projektu:
The goal of the project is to explore the impact of nationalist mobilisation and discourses on the Slovak-speaking non-elite rural population during the dualist period of the Kingdom of Hungary. Focusing on the decades between the 1880s and 1910s, and centred on four specific regions in the northern part of the kingdom, the project aims to provide a complex examination of the nature of the Slovak speaking rural population’s indifference to national mobilisation and its alleged ignorance of politics. The project will analyse nationalist discourses, their presence, appropriation, adaptation and exclusion in rural settings. It will examine various types of social and institutional settings and historical events, such as rallies, elections, protests, conventions, interactions with authorities and nationalist activists, instances of both benevolent and violent interventions by the representatives of state power, and forms of collective organisation and resistance. Furthermore, it will assess the agency of various actors, both institutional and non-institutional, including individual members of the rural communities under investigation.
